Did you know that…

  • Dancers make the lowest median annual earnings of any arts discipline studied by the National Endowment for the Arts?

  • That of artforms studied by the NEA, dance has the highest percentage of workers who identify as female, as well as non-white or Hispanic?

  • That although women make up the majority of the dance workforce, men still outnumber women in artistic leadership and choreographer roles around the world?

  • Though California ranks as one of the top 3 most expensive states to live in, and has one of the highest concentrations of jobs in dance, it does not rank among the top paying states for dancers, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics?

These statistics are part of the reason why MashUp’s work to uplift female-identifying artists is so important. Each year, approximately one third of MashUp’s overall annual budget goes directly to paying women artists. Our annual summer fundraising campaign, running July through National Women’s Equality Day, is crucial to helping MashUp uplift AND pay women artists well.

Funds raised will directly support MashUp's 7 core programs, which each year…

  • provide paid artistic opportunities for 30-40 women artists

  • amplify work from 20-30 diverse women choreographers by presenting it to a broad LA audience

  • offer opportunities, resources, and training, while building community, to over 100 early and mid-career dance professionals.

  • facilitate dialogue on key societal issues, especially pertaining to gender.

Hear what some of the Women Artists we’ve worked with have to say…

The International Women's Day Dance Festival, hosted by MashUp Dance had such a wonderful, supportive spirit. It was a joy and an honor to participate. The festival panels were relevant and intriguing. The invited artists were among the most innovative, diverse and interesting in LA. It was well organized and efficient. This festival is a gift to women artists and a gift to the city of Los Angeles!

-International Women’s Day Dance Festival Participant

MashUp’s International Women’s Day Festival has impacted my life for the past two years-having presented choreography in both 2022 and 2023. The festival is such a highlight of my year-bringing together high-caliber artists in environments filled with support and driven towards positive change. Featuring panels, classes, and choreography showcases, this festival offers so much to the community, participating artists, and International Women’s Day in the larger sense. It empowers and strengthens both female-identifying artists and the Los Angeles community. I have truly been touched by the dancing, people, and mission behind MashUp's International Women's Day Festival and will continue to fully support it each year.

"Having opportunities like [MashUp’s] residency gives artists the permission to take time in their creation process, to feel valued as an artist and to help let go of some of the outside stressors that can negatively affect a process."

-Tess Hewlett, Fall 2022 Choreographer-in-Residence

“There is something inherently powerful in bringing a group of authentic women together in the spirit of dance and using that energy to work in community outreach…that has been one of the most gratifying parts of working with MashUp.”

-Coco Williams, 2022 Company Dancer
