get to know: Katie Reese
"I feel like I am living my dream right now. I get to dance every day, perform and be surrounded by talented people who share my same passion. I'm just going to keep doing what I am doing and hope it leads to bigger things."
MashUp rehearsal:
"I love everything about going to MashUp Rehearsal. I love Sarah and Victoria. The girls are all so sweet and talented. It's just amazing being in a group with such incredible dancers. Also, I feel like I am being pushed and challenged. It is a positive environment and I am so happy to be a part of it."
Why do you love concert dance?
"Concert dance allows for a dancer to show off their technical abilities and utilize their artistry. I feel it's more about the artistry and athletic ability rather than looking a certain way. "
"I think every time I am at class or rehearsal or watching a performance I am being influenced. I love watching dance and I feel I learn most from watching other's dancing. It's amazing to see how unique everyone is and what they bring to their work."
Favorite Performances:
"There are a lot of performing experiences that I have loved doing. I have had the privilege of working with choreographer, Courtney Miller Jr. as a dancer in the new Harold and Kumar movie coming out in November. It was my first featured film and I feel so in love with dancing for film. My last year of college, I was in a Great Works project with Lines Ballet. I had the privilege of working with Arturo Fernandez. He was such an inspiration and he helped me grow tremendously as an artist. In this project I was a soloist and actually danced a male role! It was such an adrenaline rush and a different way of moving my body, that I wasn't used too. "
This photo is of my students from back home, I truly miss them and they are unbelievable and truly inspiring.
First time in LA! Back in the day.
Do you have a Favorite performer, teacher, or choreographer?
"I just recently started taking Justin Giles class and I love the feeling of freedom I get when I am dancing his choreography. The dance teachers from my studio back at home and at Western Michigan University have influenced me a lot. I also taught at a studio back at home and that really helped me grow as a dancer, person and choreographer. The students there challenged me and inspired me so much. "
When did you decide that you wanted to be a professional dancer?
"I actually played soccer and danced growing up. In high school, I had to decide between sports and dance. When I quit playing soccer and devoted all my time to dance and switched studios, I fell in love with dance all over again in a new way. That is when I decided dance was for me."
Favorite dance outfit:
"When I am rehearsing, I personally like to wear half tops or crop tops and shorts. I feel most comfortable when I can move freely and see my lines."
If MashUp was going on a world tour, where would be your ideal place to perform?
"Australia!"
What is your favorite and least favorite part of dance class?
"Honestly, warming up is my least favorite, I rather just dance for the full class...but I know I would injure myself. I am always just so eager to learn new choreography and move. I never want class to end. I love learning."
Education:
"I graduated from Western Michigan University with my BA in dance and minor in communications. My other interests include nutrition and running, I would love to do something with fitness and nutrition later on. I am also a very crafty person; I enjoy painting, and arts and crafts."
"Success to me is achieving your goals, going after your dreams and being the best you can be. I feel everyone is in control of their lives and their only limit is themselves, so we control our success."
